Lima Township Board denies Jackson Road rezoning request

By Lisa Carolin

Whether or not to approve a request to rezone 8925 Jackson Road from Manufactured Home (MH) to Single Family-Residential (R-1A) led to an energetic discussion by members of the Lima Township Board at its Jan. 13 meeting.

Lima Township Zoning Administrator Tom Caplis said that it is currently the only manufactured housing zoning in Lima Township, and that because of the high density in that area (next to Thornton Farms), it makes the most sense to locate mobile housing there.

Lima Township Supervisor Craig Maier said that the current zoning would allow the property’s owner to do what he intends, which is to build clustered homes, which are allowed in mobile home zoning.

The property is a total of 30 acres that includes woodlands, wetlands, and Mill Creek.

The board voted unanimously to deny the rezoning request and to maintain the current Manufactured Home (MH) zoning.

In other action, the board voted to adopt the taxation exemption guidelines for 2020.

There was no discussion at the meeting about the new township hall. Board members received a sealed bid proposal for an architect and were asked to read through it and give comments by the end of the week.
