March 18: Transition Town Chelsea radon presentation

On Monday, March 18, at 6:30 p.m., attendees to the Transition Town Chelsea will hear a presentation about radon from Passive House certifier and architect Christina Snyder.

The group meets at the Washington Street Educational Center, 512 E. Washington St., room 112.

“Radon might be coming into your home.”  You have probably heard about this before.  Washtenaw County and the area around it are known for relatively high levels of radon in the soil.  Too much radon can cause lung cancer.

Snyder has discovered that common building materials such as concrete can also emit radon into the air of your home.  She gave a conference presentation to the North American Passive House Network in 2018.

Included in her presentation will be the basics of the radon issue, how you can test for it, how to mitigate it, and the story of her surprise discovery of radon coming from within her own Passive House which is under construction near Chelsea.

Because Passive Houses are built to be especially airtight for energy efficiency, Snyder and her husband Chris Coon had a serious problem on their hands. Learn how they solved the problem and gain knowledge that might be useful in your own home situation too.

Potluck meal begins at 6:30, and the presentation begins at 7:15 p.m. If you are coming to the potluck meal, please bring a dish to pass and your own place settings
