In Chelsea this March, there’s snow business like show business.
Chelsea Area Players Youth Theatre proudly presents Disney’s Frozen, Jr., bringing the beloved story of Anna, Elsa, and the kingdom of Arendelle to life with a record-breaking cast of 82 local young performers.
Performances will take place March 6 and 7 at 7 p.m., and March 8 at 2 p.m. at the Washington Street Education Center, 500 Washington St.
Produced by Vicky James and directed by Alex Moore, this high-energy production features the songs audiences know and love, including the unstoppable anthem that took over living rooms, car rides, showers, and most of 2013.
Moore remembers the original movie phenomenon well. “The music and characters were everywhere. Kids were endlessly singing its songs… you couldn’t get away from Elsa and Anna.” As proof of its ubiquity, Moore even slipped “Let It Go” into a completely unrelated CAP play that year as a musical inside joke.
More than a decade later, the magic has yet to melt. With 82 young performers, Moore notes the cast is the largest of which she is aware. While the story’s popularity may have drawn them in, Moore believes the turnout says something bigger about the community itself. “I also think it says a lot about the value we place on the arts here in Chelsea.”
At its heart, Frozen, Jr. is more than sparkling ice and powerhouse vocals. It is about connection. “I love that theater creates a family,” Moore said. “I hope we have created a web of caring and support for each other, and that we all leave this production with a much larger family than what we started with.”
Audiences can expect colorful costumes, energetic choreography, familiar songs, and the unmistakable joy that happens when young performers take the stage together. It is a celebration of courage, sisterhood, and the warmest kind of winter magic.
Frozen, Jr. is sponsored by 3rdGoat, Equality Chelsea, and Geek Brush Studio.
Tickets are $10 and are available at Chelsea Hometown Pharmacy, online at ChelseaAreaPlayers.org, or at the door.
Bundle up, bring the family, and get ready to let it go. The forecast calls for a familiar blizzard of tunes with a 100 percent chance of applause.
