While March traditionally evokes thoughts of lions and lambs, Chelsea’s spring will be heralded by ogres, fairy tale and woodland creatures, and an exciting assortment of characters.
Chelsea Area Players Youth Theater (CAP Jr.) prepares for its spring production of Shrek the Musical Jr. at the George Prinzing Auditorium, Washington Street Education Center, March 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. and on March 9 at 2 p.m.
Co-produced by Vicky James and Todd Ducsay, Shrek the Musical Jr. was last performed by CAP Jr in 2015.
Shrek the Musical Jr. is the adventure-filled story of Shrek’s coming of age and awareness in the Kingdom of Duloc, where the evil Lord Farquaad unjustly persecutes fairytale creatures for being different. Shrek, and his fairy tale cast, find camaraderie, love, and true acceptance, with a few twists and turns along the way.
Shrek is directed by Alex Moore, whose tenure with CAP Jr began in 2009. Moore articulates an important theme of this production: “that what [people] look like doesn’t matter; what matters is how they make each other feel… reminding us that we are all different, unique individuals, but those differences are what make us strong.” Moore reminds us that “we may each have our own stories to tell with our own journeys along the way, but we take them with the important people in our lives.”
The cast includes nearly 70 young actors, spanning grades 3-8, from Chelsea and surrounding areas.

Chelsea Area Players was formed by a group of Chelsea High School musical alumni in 1972. The purpose of the Chelsea Area Players is to enrich the educational and cultural life of the community, promote understanding and appreciation of an important art, provide worthwhile entertainment, encourage interest and active participation by the community in all phases of the theatre through dramatic productions and other related activities, and to foster and support the involvement of adolescents and young adults of the community in the dramatic arts.
