May 16-17: ‘The Little Mermaid Jr.’ costume magic transforms cast into sea creatures

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Crystal Hayduk for the information in this story.)

With hundreds of shows and many years of experience under his belt, Brian Myers has taken up the challenge of creating about 80 costumes for the 47 cast members of “The Little Mermaid Jr.,” an adaptation of the 2008 Broadway musical.

“These kids have been working so hard to learn this show and give the audience a great performance, so they deserve to have authentic costumes that will help portray all the parts,” Myers said.

Prince Eric looks regal in his silky, bejeweled costume for the palace; and mermaid Ariel’s costume has to allow for the quick switch to human legs. A few of Myers’ favorite sea creature costumes include the court composer, Sebastian the crab; the tiny herald, Sea Horse; and the sea turtle.

Co-director Christine Landis will be creating Ursula the Sea Witch’s costume.

The play takes place May 16-17 at 7 p.m. and May 18 at 3 p.m. in the George Prinzing Auditorium at the Washington Street Education Center.

Tickets are $10 (general admission) and available in advance at Chelsea Pharmacy, 1125 South Main St., or at the door.

According to ticket chairperson MaryAnn Guenther, “This is a great show and the kids are excited to perform.”
