May 21: Chelsea High School Key Club, Interact Club Fundraising Bottle and Can Drive

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

The Chelsea High School Key Club and Interact Club will be collecting returnable bottles and cans to support the disaster relief organization ShelterBox on Friday, May 21 at Chelsea High School.

Community members can drop off returnables at Chelsea High School anytime throughout the day. Park in the Freer Road lot, and leave bags of clean returnables outside the building at entrance #20, located along the side of the building facing the Alumni Arbor.

Key Club and Interact Club members will spend the weekend stuffing the return machines and earnings will be sent to ShelterBox via the Chelsea Rotary Club.

ShelterBox was founded in 2000 to provide emergency shelter to people affected by disasters and humanitarian crises around the world. It is made up of people who believe in shelter as a human right – that shelter from the chaos of disaster and conflict is vital. They provide the tools that enable people to rebuild homes and transform their lives.

Since then, staff and volunteers have helped to shelter more than 2 million people in more than 100 countries around the world, from the tsunami in Indonesia to Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy. Aid comes in the form of family-sized tents specially designed to withstand the elements for temporary shelter until they are able to start repairing and rebuilding a home.

Essential tools are provided so rebuilding can begin. Included are cooking sets, solar lights, thermal blankets, water storage and purification, and activity sets for children. Aid is customized depending on the needs of the community.

Partnering with Rotary International, ShelterBox gets local contact in communities where and when their services are needed.
