New Chelsea City Manager Elle Cole attended her first City Council meeting on Feb. 23 and called the opportunity to work for the city an honor and a wonderful experience.
And after her first two weeks on the job, she has found that city staff have a high level of expertise and they truly care about Chelsea.

Seven people spoke during public comment, including several Chelsea High School juniors who participated in a walkout last Friday protesting ICE. If you’d like to hear what was on their minds, please listen to the meeting video.
Prior to the business portion of the meeting, the city welcomed its newest member of the Chelsea Police Department, Officer Jared Atkinson during a badge pinning ceremony.
The city council unanimously approved the following:
- Feb. 9 as Cub Scout Pack 455 Day after the group of scouts toured the city and learned about government.
- Extended the appointments of members of the city’s Housing Commission and their term lengths for another two years and longer if needed.
- Adopted a resolution for a special event permit to hold a No Kings Day 3.0 protest at Pierce Park on March 28.
- Discussed a resolution for immigration and Customs Enforcement based on a model that Washtenaw County recently approved. Changes were discussed and it is expected to be brought back to the City Council for a vote in an upcoming meeting.
- Approved on first reading the repeal of the Local Officers Compensation Commission.
- Approved the replacement of the 15-year-old HVAC unit for the police department at a cost of $18,200
- Approved the purchase of a $143, 500 excavator from Kubota of Jackson utilizing electrical department bond money.
- Approved the buyout of a lease on a 2022 bucket truck at the cost of $106,352 that will also utilize electrical department bond money.
