Tickets on sale now for CAP Jr.’s production of Romeo and Winifred, A Tragical Comedy in Two and a Half Acts
CAP Jr., the youth theater company of the Chelsea Area Players will present Romeo and Winifred, A Tragical Comedy in Two and a Half Acts at the George Prinzing Auditorium, Washington Street Education Center, Nov. 10-11 at 7 p.m. and on Nov. 12 at 2 p.m.
It is modern-day New York City, where the high-end Montagues Department store and the cheapo Capulets Discount Mart rival clothing stores meet in the street to trade vicious insults.
Romeo and Winifred, the heirs to these two retail empires, fall in love, and well… you know the rest. But this play has a happy ending. With pie fights instead of duels, a nurse obsessed with paper cuts, and an outrageous parody of the most romantic scene in literature, you’ll forget the story ever had anything to do with tragedy.
Director Alex Moore notes, “I used to teach middle school English, and one of my favorite subjects to teach was Shakespeare. So, when I found this parody, my inner English teacher jumped for joy at being able to introduce all our cast members, to the joys of Shakespeare.
Despite the modern and humorous tone of our play, it still exposes students to many of the components of Shakespeare’s classic: famous lines (“Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?”), verse written in iambic pentameter, a duel, a “death” scene or two, and most of the original characters.”
She adds, “I’ve loved seeing the students’ enthusiasm and am always so proud and amazed at what they can accomplish.”
This hilarious spoof turns Shakespeare upside down and shakes things up with a stage full of zany modern-day characters that will keep you in stitches.
General admission tickets are available for $10 at Chelsea Pharmacy, 1125 South Main St. or at the door.
