Oct. 1: Chelsea Kiwanis Club begins new fiscal year

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

Monday is the beginning of the Chelsea Kiwanis Club’s fiscal year.  We will be celebrating the work our officers and directors have done and installing the 2018-2019 board members.

The new president, Marianne Knox, begins her term to lead the club. Conducting the installation will be Jacqueline Otto, Lt. Governor of the Michigan District of Kiwanis.

At the last meeting, Elizabeth Hammer gave a clear and informative presentation of how redistricting works every 10 years. In the past, it was common for whatever political party that was in power to redraw voting districts to favor their candidates.

Even in a district with roughly the same number of Republicans and Democrats, boundaries can be drawn to favor one party’s candidates over another. Proposition 2 would take the redistricting process away from legislators and give the job to 13 citizens. Over 400,000 people signed petitions to get the proposal on the November ballot. Opponents say it would take away the decision from elected officials and the system is working well as it is.

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m. Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis.
