One World One Family is continuing its Community Discussion series aimed at increasing the overall level of social justice knowledge in our community. This fifth session will be held on Sunday, Oct.19 @ 3 pm in the Chelsea City Council Chambers. The theme of this on-going discussion series is Making Sense of the Unprecedented.
“What to Know About Voters’ Rights and Voter Suppression” will be the topic for Session 5.
Voter suppression refers to any measure or strategy that reduces the ability of eligible citizens to register or cast their ballot. Voter suppression can involve legal and also extralegal tactics intended to sway an election’s outcome by limiting voting access, most usually along specific racial, political or socioeconomic groups.
A US citizen’s right to vote comes from a combination of constitutional amendments and federal laws that have expanded and contracted voting eligibility over time. We will explore some of this history in our state and look at current ballot initiatives. A representative from Voters Not Politicians will lead the discussion.
The background readings are timely and consist of articles and videos available at the One World One Family website: www.owofchelsea.org/resources/Community Discussion.
