Palmer lot event space nearing completion; DDA planning soft opening

As work on the Palmer lot event space nears completion, the Chelsea Downtown Development Authority Board (DDA) discussed the potential for a soft opening of the space during the Sounds and Sights Festival on June 27 when people could tour and ask questions about the community-gathering space downtown.

DDA members are hoping that residents will be inspired to assist them in finding a name for the spot. The city has a naming policy for public spaces, which includes a public hearing where residents can weigh in with their thoughts and ideas.

City Manager John Hanifan said the space is expected to be “turn key” to the city by July 30 and improvements are moving along, curbs are being poured, and the removal of the asphalt in the center, which will be replaced with grass, is expected to take place the week of July 2.

It also expected that the DDA will have between $125,000-$150,000 for projects in the upcoming budget year and the DDA is expected to discuss a strategic plan during a July 12 work session.

Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Monica Monsma said that nomination forms for Citizen of the Year and Lifetime Achievement will be available next week and the nomination period closes on July 31.

She also reminded folks that the Guitars for Good fundraising campaign is underway and encouraged people to vote for their favorite decorated guitars and support non-profits at the same time.

She said the chamber’s annual car raffle tickets are also available. More information about all of these events can be found here.
