Plastic Free July?

By Jean M. Vargas

Remember July 2024, when it was warm and sunny? During that time there was an international movement to decrease plastic, especially plastic waste from our world.

What difference did the movement make?

How successful was it?

Plastic Free July created in 2011, is a unique social movement which empowers community, corporate and government actions to reduce plastic waste.

“As we confront the growing issue of plastic pollution, which is expected to triple by 2040, the need for meaningful change becomes more urgent.” (Plastic Free July)

In 2024, we were asked to pledge to reduce our use of single-use plastics, especially plastic food wrap, plastic beverage bottles, and single-use plastic cups. Not everybody pledged, but hopefully many people became more aware of the building challenge to reduce plastic pollution in our local communities and the world.

Those who pledged received education and suggestions on how to reduce plastic usage, articles about successful individual and community efforts, and encouragement to continue. Throughout the month, there was also a noted increase in social media, radio and television programs, and printed news to address these issues.  It was amazing to see the rise in public awareness and interest.

Findings from a review of Plastic Free July 2024:

  • Globally, more people were aware of the Plastic Free July movement.
  • At least 174 million people took part in the 2024 challenge.
  • Participants took more action to reduce plastic waste.
  • Participants reduced their household waste.

Globally, participants reduced:

  • Non-recoverable (landfill) waste
  • Recyclable waste
  • Plastic consumption
  • More of the population supports policies and actions to reduce waste.
  • Participating results in strong social connections and a sense of well-being.
