Publisher’s Message: Celebrate National Ag Day

Who is that hiding behind the table flowers?
Do you know who is hiding behind the table flowers at the recent ag banquet?

Oh what a difference a year makes.

Last year on St. Patrick’s Day, I was planting some of my hanging vegetable baskets while my gardening friends told me I was nuts. No one in Michigan plants anything outside so early, I was told.

But, I lucked out … everything survived and in fact, thrived. And, I sure enjoyed those early vegetables. This year, however, those same baskets are covered in a layer of white stuff.

So it’s with warm feelings that I shall celebrate National Agriculture Week, March 17-23, and National Ag Day on Tuesday, March 19 seriously dreaming about what I’ll plant on those baskets this year.

And, I’ll stop by the Chelsea Wellness Center where Wade Pregitzer of Pregitzer Farm Market will be all day with a display and information and he’ll answer folk’s questions about local farming, CSAs and the healthy benefits of local agriculture.

On another note, some of you know that for more than a week, I’ve been recovering from the crud that’s been going around.  And before I came down with it, I launched a second “Update” site in Dexter. I thought I’d be able to cover both communities because for years while at “The Ann Arbor News,” I covered all of Western Washtenaw.

But that’s not been the case, and getting sick was a wake-up call. One person can only work so many hours in one week. So, I’m stepping back from Dexter for now, and am concentrating all of my one-person efforts on the Chelsea community. (And hopefully getting all my energy back, while getting rid of this nasty cough.)

For those who might be new readers to Chelsea Update, I gave up my full-time job with benefits last June to follow my dream of publishing Chelsea Update and as much as I hate to ask for contributions, it’s one of the ways that I can continue to bring you All the News that’s Fit to Print about Chelsea.

And, because I’m asked this question about once a week – No, I do not have any corporate backing from any other media company.  You might see some of my stories in “The Sun Times” and that’s because I’ve given my permission to the owners to print any story that I post on Chelsea Update in their newspaper for free.

So, if you like what you’ve been reading, please support the local businesses that are advertising on my site, and please consider making a donation/contribution of any amount either through Paypal, which has been added to the site, or by sending a check to made out to Chelsea Update, and sending it to Lisa Allmendinger, publisher, 18819 Bush Road, Chelsea, MI 48118.

And I promise to continue doing the absolutely best job I can to let people know what’s going on in the Chelsea community. Your ideas, input, story suggestions and press releases are always welcome.
