Two elementary students were recognized as December’s Chelsea School District (CSD) Students of the Month. These students demonstrate the qualities of the Portrait of a Graduate (POG), well-rounded 21st century learners.
Kimberly Gillow, North Creek Elementary School principal, introduced second-grader Raegan Bourdon at the CSD Board of Education (BOE) meeting on Dec. 12, 2022. Raegan, the daughter of Lizzy and Travis Bourdon, was nominated for her integrity and problem-solving ability.
Kindergarten teacher Kimmy Conn wrote in her nomination that Raegan works hard and is willing to help other students. She wears a smile to school each day, and looks for ways to help younger students on the playground and in the hallways.
Emma Jones, Raegan’s first-grade teacher, said she could count on Raegan to choose to do the right thing. She exhibits determination and thinks through her actions, showing her self-confidence. She senses when others need help and willingly lends support, even when no one is looking.
“We are proud of Raegan because she exemplifies the attributes of confidence, integrity, empathy, and problem solving,” said Gillow.

South Meadows Elementary School Principal Stacie Battaglia introduced Jacob Thompson, a fourth grader who is also a December Student of the Month, at the BOE meeting on Jan. 9. (Jacob and his family were not able to attend the Dec. 12 BOE meeting.) Jacob, the son of Courtney and Nick Thompson, was nominated by his literacy teacher, Katie Spisich, for his excellence and attitude.
Spisich wrote in her nomination that it is hard to choose only one POG competency because Jacob has so many. He has a positive attitude every day and shows empathy in conversations with both adults and students. He puts forth 100% effort in advocating for himself, and exhibits grit to complete difficult tasks. Daily, he sets a great example to his peers.
Toni Kinsey, Jacob’s classroom teacher, said he leads by example, knows what needs to be done and begins working right away during independent work time. Jacob asks questions when he needs support, but also quietly helps classmates when he can. He acts with integrity; makes his best effort; and is kind, honest, and fair with others. “He is a role model that I appreciate having in class every day,” she said.
“Jacob exemplifies the attributes of grit, advocacy, self-direction, and integrity,” said Battaglia, as she presented him as Student of the Month.
The board presented the students with certificates of recognition for portraying key competencies of the Portrait of a Graduate.
