Recent obituary: Stella Davis

Stella Alice Davis lived gently and died peacefully at Chelsea Retirement Community on May 30, 2014.

On Dec. 7, 1914, almost one hundred years ago, she was born on the family farm in Lake Park, Minnesota, to Simon and Alice (Severson) Johnson. As the youngest of five children, she grew up loved by her parents as well as her brothers and sisters, Orville, Evelyn, Leonard, and Doris.

After graduating from Lake Park High School, Stella moved to Chicago, where she met Merle Davis. Their loving marriage began on July 20, 1940, and lasted for 66 years. Merle and Stella made their home in Blue Island, Illinois, where they raised their children Barbara, John, Joan, and Robert. Stella and Merle were active members of Grace United Methodist Church.

Stella taught first grade Sunday school, served as secretary for United Methodist Women, and, along with Merle, served as church treasurer. In addition, she was active in the PTA and the St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary.

In 1983, when they retired, Stella and Merle moved to Chelsea, Michigan to be closer to their family. They became active members of Chelsea First United Methodist Church and volunteers at South School and Chelsea Community Hospital Auxiliary. Thirteen years later, they moved to the Chelsea Retirement Community. There, they made many friends, and they continued to play a central role in four generations of their family.
