The Chelsea Police Station, local fire station, local library, Chelsea Lumber, Zou Zous, and Green Tree Pediatrics are among the local landmarks newly represented as part of Chelsea Community Education’s Safety Town.

The safety education program teaches personal safety to children starting Young 5s or kindergarten in the fall. The new group of preschoolers has the chance to do their learning on a brand new set of local landmarks, thanks to a grant from the Chelsea Education Foundation (CEF).

CEF President Lynn Fox said a grant request from instructor Melissa Struk to replace the plywood buildings was granted by the CEF with help from the community.

“We donated money for the facades, Chelsea Lumber donated supplies, and high school art students painted them,” said Fox. “The idea was to invite community members to be part of it, and we had a great response.”

Many of the participants were on hand for the debut of the new Safety Town on June 20 when a ribbon cutting ceremony was hosted by the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce.

Safety Town teaches children about traffic and bus safety and more with the help of special visitors, stories, and projects using a mock city equipped with tricycles, street signs, and traffic lights.
