Last month, readers may remember, Buzz and I competed in a big Toller Specialty Dog Show in Monroe.

A Saturday night banquet was part of the festivities, and I contacted Andrea Pawlowski, owner of RosePaw Goods, to customize a cake with the show’s logo on it for the event.

I wanted to let readers know what a terrific experience I had working with this local baker. Her attentiveness to customer service was outstanding. The cake was gorgeous and the taste even better.

A nurse at Chelsea Hospital, Pawlowski has taken her enjoyment of cake baking and decorating and turned it into a tasty small business.

“Baking has been a sort of therapy for me outside of my career as a nurse,” she said. “Just as it is very special to me to be a nurse, and to help people during some of the worst times of their lives, it is also special to me to be chosen to make the sweet treats for special occasions in someone’s life.”

To explain the origins of her second passion project, “I have made birthday cakes for my two wonderful stepdaughters since my husband and I started dating 10 years ago. Each year, I would ask them what theme they wanted for their cake, and, they seemed to continue to make them more and more challenging every year.”

Among the themes were Harry Potter, The Hobbit, and a horse.

Then about four years ago, a friend and colleague asked Pawlowski if she’d make her sister’s birthday cake. She took on the challenge and enjoyed doing it.

“My friend Chris, and her sister loved it,” Pawlowski said. Since then, “I have made cakes and cookies for her family birthdays, Christmas, and Easter gatherings ever since.”

Another friend and colleague asked her to make cupcakes and decorated sugar cookies for her bridal shower.

Then she saw a post on a local Facebook site for someone looking for a cake for a 50th birthday and decided to respond.

Since then, Pawlowski has created sweet treats for numerous special events – weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, first birthdays, 50th birthdays, 100th birthdays, and many other birthdays in between.

“I have done high school/college graduations, going away parties, baptisms, Easter, and Christmas cakes,” she said.

Pawlowski began her business only offering two layer 9″ cakes and cupcakes, now she has more than 20 items on her menu.

“Our community is so supportive of my small businesses,” she said, adding, “It has been a lot of fun, and I continue to learn and grow with each order. I am always looking for fresh new items to offer and welcome special requests.”

Pawlowski’s future goals? To open a bed and breakfast with an on-site bakery.
