A restored historic barn came alive Saturday night, May 3, with the sounds of dance music and the theme of “Rustic Romance.”

Several hundred students along with adult chaperones, including administrators and teachers, filled the nearly 200-year-old Cottonwood Barn in Webster Township. The location was chosen by members of Chelsea High School’s prom committee, which have been working since the beginning of the year on the event.

“An off-campus prom is a new tradition at Chelsea High School, and I hope that everyone can look back on it with smiles on their faces,” said Veronica Wolf-Boyle, a member of the prom committee.

“It really feels like going out somewhere,” said Marina Calvachi, a junior. “It’s so nice here. I’m glad we made enough money to afford to hold the prom here.”

“It’s cool and romantic,” said Dennis Spaulding, a junior.

“I’m excited to be here,” said Ella Loveland, a sophomore.

Lisa Stebelton, prom advisor, was pleased at students’ response to the venue.

“The kids had so much fun decorating the barn (Friday) night,” she said.

Chelsea High School Principal Mike Kapolka sat alongside Stebelton welcoming students who entered the barn.

“I have not missed a prom since being at Chelsea,” Kapolka said.

Lauren Bass, a junior, who has served on student council for three years, says that helping plan the prom has been a lot of fun.

“It’s just a big celebration for the juniors and seniors,” said Bass. “Those two years of high school can be extremely stressful, so it’s nice to have a dance just to ourselves!”

Bass says that her goal on prom night was to forget about all the worries of exams and have a great time.

“The goal is just to have everything run smoothly, and of course assure that everyone has a memorable night,” said Wolf-Boyle.

Kapolka says the “After Prom” is a long-standing Chelsea High School tradition that takes place at Chelsea Lanes courtesy of the Greenleaf family with planning by the high school’s Students Leading Student group.

“We want to provide a safe and fun place for kids to go after prom to grab a bite to eat, bowl, and win some great door prizes,” said Kapolka.
