With only a few days remaining before the Hudson Invitational, the 15 members of the Beach Middle School Science Olympiad team are aflutter with nervous energy. The kids will spend Valentine’s Day doing one of the things they love most – competing and taking tests in a variety of science-related topics.

According to head coach Sheryl Dewyer, 28 teams from across southern Michigan are expected to compete in the event. Results from the invitational help students discern their areas of weakness so that they can better focus on preparing for the regional competition at Adrian College on

“The snow day (on Feb. 3) hurt us a little bit,” Dewyer said. A few events that were on the practice schedule for that afternoon were “practical, hands-on” events that

required students to be present together to establish and streamline who does what so that all tasks can be completed in the required time allotted during the competition.

“Overall, though, we have a very strong team and I think they will do really well, and will also continue to improve over the next month and a half before Regionals,” predicted Dewyer.

Science Olympiad receives financial support through a grant from the Chelsea Education Foundation.
