(Chelsea Update would like to thank Anna Cangialosi for the information in this story.)

Silver Maples of Chelsea and the Chelsea District Library are offering readers of all ages a chance to participate in a Picture Book Walk along the Silver Maples Community Wellness Path on Sept. 14 at 11 a.m.

After a special ribbon cutting, participants will walk the path while reading from large installations of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, written by Michael Rosen and illustrated by acclaimed illustrator Helen Oxenbury.

Art installations will display large pages from the picture book and will be placed throughout the wellness path.

In addition, here will be performances by local celebrity readers.

The Picture Book Walk installation will be up for viewing through October.

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt tells the story of a brave family who must travel through forest, snow, and caves to track down a bear. With tremendous pace and humor, this beloved book is not to be missed. After completing the Picture Book Walk, kids can go on a bear hunt throughout Chelsea.

Clue sheets will be given out at the Picture Book Walk and will be available at the library beginning Sept. 14.

The library partnered with Meg Gower, owner and Landscape Designer at Gower Design Group, and Lorin Kummer, teacher, artist, and therapist at Pathway to Renewal to determine the best locations along the fitness trail to represent the book–by looking for fun, yet safe, spaces in which to play-out the story.

Gower and Kummer have designed, and will install, reusable display signs for the Picture Book Walk, which will be used for next year’s 5H Community Read. They’ll display different children’s books in several outdoor locations.

The 5H Community Read is a district-wide initiative to promote a more active and better-connected community, while encouraging a love of reading. For more information and a listing of events in all five healthy communities, visit 5hcommunityread.wordpress.com.

The 5H Community Read is a partnership between the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation, the Chelsea District Library, the Dexter District Library, the Jackson District Library in Grass Lake, the Manchester District Library, and the Capital Area District Libraries in Stockbridge. It is supported by a generous grant from community partner, the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation.
