CCK-logo-small(Chelsea Update would like to thank Kathy Carter for the information in this story.)

Chelsea Community Kitchen and Robin Hills Farm, in conjunction with the Maine Farmland Trust, will present the film Growing Local on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Robin Hills Farm just north of Chelsea, MI.

The free screening of the film will be followed by a community discussion. We are pleased that one of the young farmers featured in the film, Taryn Hammer Marcus, will join us for the evening.

In addition, representatives from local farms and advocacy groups will form a panel for answering questions about Michigan’s local food movement.

The film will be preceded at 6 p.m. by a four-course “farm to table” dinner prepared by the Robin Hills Farm “Garden Party” class, led by chef Emily van der Waard.

  • Gazpacho Bites and Smoked Goat Cheese with Honey
  • Caprese Salad
  • Grilled Curried Chicken Skewers and Cauliflower Steaks
  • Pound Cake and Ground Cherry Trifle with Raspberry Coulis

This rustic-style dinner on the farm will be served family style. Please bring your own place settings (plate, napkin, and flatware) in order to reduce waste.

Ticket reservations are available at Eventbrite, but must be confirmed by sending a check to Chelsea Community Kitchen (address below). All proceeds will benefit Chelsea Community Kitchen, a 501(c)3 non-profit.

Growing Local is collaboration between Maine Farmland Trust and Seedlight Pictures. The film points to the vibrancy and the growing pains of the local food movement in Maine, and the uncertain fate of the farmers and farmland that keep it alive.

Premiering in September 2014, this documentary has been selected for over a dozen film festivals and won several awards.

The film contains three short vignettes: “Seeding A Dream,” “Pig Not Pork,” and “Changing Hands.” Each focuses on a different challenge hindering the growth of the local food movement, and points toward possible solutions. Our panel will focus on how these challenges impact Michigan’s local food movement and the solutions we are finding here.
