The Sounds and Sights Festival will hold its second community chalk art event during its lineup of activities on Saturday, July 26 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Participants of all abilities and ages are encouraged to help transform the black asphalt of downtown Chelsea into vibrant colors and works of art. And, this year, Chelsea Area Festivals and Events committee have added prizes up to $500 to help draw artists and grow the event.

“I had a blast participating as an artist in the Chalk Art Event last year, despite the rain. The comradery of the artists and the enthusiasm of the crowd was incredible, and I am excited to be a part of the experience again,” said Chalk Art Coordinator Denise Cugliari in a press release.

As a participating artist last year, Cugliari brought new ideas to the Chelsea Area Festivals and Events, including a new award system. This year, spectators will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite piece of chalk art in four categories.

A “People’s Choice” award will be presented to one winner in each category: a $500 prize for Adult Artist (ages 19 and older), $250 prize for a group, $100 prize for youth (ages 12-18 years), $20 prize for Children (ages 2-11 years).

All participants will be assigned a free, 5×5 foot square space to showcase their unique chalk art drawing. But, pre-registration is required to participate in the contests and application information can be found here. Applications must be submitted before June 1, 2014.

For more information, please contact the chalk art coordinator Denise Cugliari at [email protected] or call 734-276-4206.

Now in its 38th year, the Sounds and Sights Festival will take place July 24-26. The event draws over 15,000 visitors annually and features national and regional live music acts, local food and brew, an indie Art Market, classic car show, chalk art contest and activities for the entire family.
