South Meadows’ 3rd-grade teachers welcome newcomer with surprise

Although one classroom of third graders wasn’t able to meet their new teacher at last week’s open house for parents and students at South Meadows Elementary, that didn’t mean that the classroom wasn’t ready for its newest occupants.

“We don’t have a third-grade teacher right now,” said new South Meadows Elementary School Principal Stacie Battaglia during the open house on Aug. 28, then she highlighted the selfless efforts of the current third-grade teachers.

Battaglia said the five current 3rd-grade teachers completely decorated the new teacher’s room — without prompting.

South-Meadows-bulletin-board“This is the kind of staff we have at South,” Battaglia said with a smile that lit up her entire face.

Heather Myers, Sarah Radomski, Michelle Schertzing, Gwen Stubbs and Lindsey Trevisan were the elves who transformed the third-grade classroom as a welcome to the newest member of the South Meadows family – Melissa McGuire.

And, Gena Klink, who retired in June, called Battaglia before the open house and offered to help at the desk directing people as they arrived.

“We have the best people in this district,” the new principal said.

Here’s what happened during the summer that prompted the need for a new hire. Kindergarten numbers at North Creek Elementary ended up being higher than expected and another classroom was needed.

A third grade teacher from South went back to North to fill that position, which left the opening.

And, with a huge pool of candidates from which to choose, district staff wanted to take its time and choose the best fit for the third grade opening.

  3. The extra meet-and-greet on Friday was very nice. One of our daughters is in this class. I could tell she appreciated being able to come in the extra day!
