SRSLY students plan duct tape fashion show on Feb. 21

(Publisher’s note: For the record, I am a member of the SRSLY board.)

The students of SRSLY are planning a fun, family-friendly substance-free event, but this time, the star of show will be duct tape.

Youth coalition members in SRSLY, a coalition for the prevention of destructive behaviors in youth, are creating the first ever SRSLY Duct Tape Fashion Show at Beach Middle School on Thursday, Feb. 21, from 7-8 pm.

Free and open to everyone, the show will feature duct creations from students and adults of all ages.

“The fashion show has been planned completely by students: they scheduled the event, created guidelines for participation, and are currently working on promotional materials,” said Jesse Kauffman, SRSLY program coordinator. “It is a great example of the value of youth leadership,” he said in a press release.

Several community members outside of the coalition have joined in on the fun. Pete Warburton, former Beach counselor and renowned duct tape artist, will be emceeing the event as well as displaying some of his fine art pieces.

Salon Rushelle of Chelsea will be offering hair and makeup services to duct tape models. Middle school students who have started their own business selling duct tape wallets, bow ties, and other accessories will be present selling their wares.

The fashion show is open to anyone age 5 and older.

Participants can submit a duct tape creation and enter one of three categories:

*clothing

*accessories

*art/sculpture.

Prizes will be awarded to the overall winner in each category as well as by grade level (youth) and age (adult) in each category.

Participants can create submissions out of only duct tape or over the top of old clothes or items. Duct tape adhesive should not be applied directly to skin.

Youth and adults interested in entering a duct tape creation in the show or volunteering for the evening can contact Jesse Kauffman by phone at 734-593-5283 or by email [email protected].
