Stephen Fetyko named new president, CEO of UMRC and Porter Hills

United Methodist Retirement Communities (UMRC) and Porter Hills (PH), which formally affiliated March 1, announced the appointment of Stephen Fetyko as president and chief executive officer.

Outgoing UMRC executive John Thorhauer will continue in his role as chief strategy officer until his retirement later this year.

“We are profoundly grateful to John for the visionary leadership he has provided our organization over the years,” said UMRC Board Chairman John Nixon, III in a press release.

“Our unparalleled growth and recent affiliation have been well-guided by his clear foresight and thoughtful management, and we wish him all the best as he departs to enjoy his own well-deserved retirement,” Nixon said.

This decision has come after 18 months of thoughtful deliberation and careful review by the CEO search committee, comprised of both UMRC and Porter Hills board members.

“We intentionally waited until the formal affiliation of UMRC and Porter Hills took place on March 1 so that both organizations would have input into the important choice for president and CEO,” Nixon said. “As a result, our shared decision allows us to move toward a future that is bright with promise for our organizations and the individuals and families we serve.”

Nixon said Fetyko has served both UMRC and Porter Hills with “excellence, dedication, and grace” as the interim CEO since November 2018.

Fetyko’s career has spanned over 20 years, with experience in acute health care, auditing, senior housing, and health service management.  Prior to his tenure as interim CEO, Steve served as vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) of UMRC since 2014.

Before joining UMRC, Fetyko served as senior vice president and CFO at Memorial Healthcare in Owosso, MI and in various finance management roles at the University of Michigan Health System. He also was an auditor focused on the senior living and nonprofit sectors with the firm of Plante Moran.
