Sylvan Township may soon allow marijuana micro-businesses to operate in the township. The Sylvan Township Board discussed that possibility during its April 6 meeting via Zoom.
Treasurer Rod Branham said he’d been doing a lot of research on the subject and sees potential for the township to garner money from fees collected. Sylvan Township Supervisor David Brooks told the board that he supports legalizing marijuana in the township, and said that they could allow any or all or none of the operations – growing, processing, quality control, transportation, and retail.
Sylvan Township Clerk Kathleen Kennedy said she wouldn’t support all five of those operations and wouldn’t want to upset residential areas, but would like to learn more.
The board did take action on a number of topics and approved the following:
- 2% cost of living raises for staff.
- Compensation for the deputy clerk and deputy treasurer at a rate of $18 per hour.
- Extending the Broadband Committee Charter for another year.
- Reappointing Kennedy to the Chelsea Area Construction Agency.
- Appointing Clifford Camp to the Sylvan Township Water and Sewer Authority.
- Authorizing a $2,500 grant from HAVA (Help America Vote Act) Grant Agreement to pay for a second vote tabulator.
- Approving the placing of flags and markers for the American Legion for Memorial Day at Maple Grove Cemetery.
- Approving Salisbury Landscape for lawn mowing service for the 2021 season.
The board rejected (Kennedy, Sandie Schulz, Kurt Koseck against) appointing Branham as Sylvan Township utilities manager contingent on a job description.
The board agreed to hold a special meeting on Tuesday, April 20, at 7 p.m. in response to a request from Danny Veri, general manager of Livonia Builders, who is hoping to start construction in May of Chelsea Springs II, a 28-unit condominium site connected to Coliseum Drive.
