Following a special meeting to discuss water rate increases in Sylvan Township, the board agreed to postpone consideration of a water rate increase until September.
The township has not increased its water rates since March 5, 2014 despite the fact that ongoing water system expenses continue to exceed projected revenues. In March of 2025, the Sylvan Board approved transferring $1,000,000 from prior lawsuit money to the Water Fund to cover projected shortages and provide necessary funds to repair and paint the water tower.
Lissa Spitz, from Washtenaw 2030 District gave a presentation of the program and encouraged Sylvan Township to join the district. Washtenaw 2030 helps to decarbonize commercial buildings by tracking energy and water use and comparing it to previous years and similar buildings. Spitz said Washtenaw 2030 gives free energy audits for municipalities such as Sylvan Township.
The Sylvan Township Board approved a resolution to adopt Ordinance 25-001, which includes approval of Zoning Text Amendment (ZTA25-001) to amend the zoning regulations by adding regulations regarding renewable energy facilities, removing the P-5 zoning district regulations and adding light regulations. The ordinance complies with the township’s Master Plan to preserve the health, safety, and welfare of the community, by allowing appropriate development of existing sites within the community.
Also approved was the purchase of two scales from Great Lakes Scale at a cost not to exceed $10,000.
Additionally, the board approved the June 27, 2025 OHM Proposal for Water System GIS Field Map Development and Water System GIS Dashboard project not to exceed $9,000.
