Sylvan Township Hall to Reopen July 12

By Lisa Carolin

The Sylvan Township Board unanimously approved re-opening Sylvan Township Hall on Monday, July 12.

That occurred at the board’s July 6 meeting at which the board voted to repeal the resolution to add parcels to the existing sewer district following a question-and-answer session with Sylvan Township Attorney Robert Thall. The township has an outdated address list and agreed that starting over and repealing the resolution would be the best way to move forward.

In a separate discussion, Thall answered questions from the board about allowing marijuana micro businesses in the township. Thall explained that the township has the option of being involved in the growth, processing, retail, transportation, testing, and micro businesses related to marijuana. He said that micro businesses can exist in any zone that the township’s zoning board allows.

Thall said that with the retail sales of marijuana, there is an excise tax the township can collect. In response to board members requests, Thall said he would connect board members with growing facilities where they could learn more.

In other action, the board approved:

  • Appointed Susan Lackey the library representative for the township and Jan Carr the at-large representative.
  • Appointed Kathleen Kennedy as CAPT/DART (Chelsea Area Planning Team/Dexter Area Regional Team) board representative and Rod Branham as alternative.
  • Appointed Kennedy as WAVE (Washtenaw Area Value Express) board representative and Branham as alternative.
  • Authorized township clerk Amanda Nimke Ballard as signer on all township bank accounts.
  • Authorized Deputy Clerk Kate Zurenko as signer on all township bank accounts.
  • Authorized new accountant, Kimberly Haines, as “read-only” user on all township bank accounts.
  • Removed Kennedy as signer on all township bank accounts.
  • Removed Kurt Koseck from project manager position.
  • Approved the purchase of a new postage machine.

The Sylvan Township Board agreed to hold a special meeting Tuesday, July 20, at 7 p.m. via Zoom to discuss quotes for website renovation.
