Kathleen Kennedy was officially sworn in as the new Sylvan Township clerk at the June 3 township board meeting.  Kennedy replaces Doug Smith, whose resignation went into effect on May 31.

Kennedy’s nomination was unanimous and she will finish out Smith’s term in office, which ends in 2016.

The board also unanimously approved $18,700 for township-wide gravel program to begin to rebuild some of the township’s dirt roads, while leaving the specific roads up to the discretion of Washtenaw County Road Commission officials.

Some of these roads have deteriorated down to a sand or log base, officials said, and will greatly benefit from new gravel. Kalmbach, Fahrner, Kilmer, Hayes, Winters, and other roads were looked at by Supervisor Scott Cooper and Treasurer Rod Branham, along with Dave Trinkle, district foreman of the Road Commission.

Maple Grove Cemetery will get a new entrance gate and fencing on Sylvan Road, and $6,000 from the cemetery fund will go to local artist and metal smith Rick DeTroyer for the installation. Fencing is also planned for the Old US-12 frontage of the cemetery. Details about the Sylvan road setback must first be confirmed, in addition to the orientation of the graves closest to the road.

In other news, Jan Carr, the township’s representative to the Chelsea District Library announced that this year’s Summer Reading Program kicks off on June 10 with all sorts of activities for participants. The next library book sale will be on Saturday, June 14, which is the day before Father’s Day.
