The Purple Rose Theatre Company will premiere a new comedy by Jeff Daniels titled, “The Meaning of Almost Everything” next month.

This is the 15th play penned by Purple Rose founder Jeff Daniels, and includes elements of slapstick, vaudeville, tragedy and farce.

“It’s an exuberant romp of a play explores the pain and the joy of human existence,” according to a press release.

The story follows two men, “A” and “B,” who exist in an undefined place and time, a place of safety and comfort, but also a place where nothing happens.

One man wants to remain. The other isn’t so sure. Through their feats of daring (and sometimes cowardice), they stumble through the darkness to find the big answers to life’s big questions.

The comedy questions the nature of our world and the absurdity of it all, and, it contains adult language and content.

Directed by Guy Sanville, the cast includes Matthew Gwynn of Farmington (Our Town, Growing Pretty) and Michael Brian Ogden of Berkley (Superior Donuts, White Buffalo, Escanaba in da Moonlight).

Eight low-priced previews will be performed Thursday, Jan. 10-Thursday, Jan. 17, with a press opening on Friday, Jan. 18. The play will run for nine weeks through March.

Regular performances will be Wednesday-Saturdays at 8 p.m. with Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 3 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

Underwriting support for this production comes from The Helppie Family Charitable Foundation, Domino’s Pizza and Ruth R. Glancy.
