And, as an aside, I can now spill the beans about the back story, which happened the day of my interview with Newman. It’s been a closely guarded secret for more than five years that I brought my four-legged Ryan to meet his driver namesake at the campsite that day.
It was just up the road from my house that Ryan Newman learned the story of how my dog got his AKC registered name — Skylark Rocketman — which will make sense to anyone who follows NASCAR. I gave Newman, a dog lover, a copy of the pedigree, the two posed for photos together and the whole story went out with photos in Newman’s newsletter to his fan club.
