Discover a new mindful practice at Breathe Yoga Chelsea and explore the foundations of Wu style Tai Chi beginning Feb. 6 at 10:30 a.m. for a 6-week workshop at 104 E. Middle St. Suite B.
Tai Chi Chuan originated in China approximately 1300 years ago. While it was designed as a martial art, most people in the West train for its wide variety of health benefits. The movements are based primarily on circular motions which flow at a smooth, even tempo while the body weight is shifted from one side to the other.
Wu style Tai Chi is one of the five traditional styles of Tai Chi Chuan. In this 6-week workshop you will learn the Wu style Tai Chi 12 Form. The slow circular motions in Wu style Tai Chi take all the joints of the body through their full natural range of motion, enhancing their flexibility and stability. Tai Chi includes breathing techniques to enhance lung capacity and stamina. The movements are simple to perform, yet demanding. Every muscle is gently trained to strengthen and loosen, with consideration given to the balance and relationship of all body parts.
These structured forms work your body gently to boost circulation, improve flexibility, and help balance. Often called “meditation in motion,” Tai Chi aids in focus and achieving calm. Forms can be modified for those with difficulties moving, or staying balanced.
This workshop will focus on the introductory 12 Form.
Continuing classes would include the standard 108 Form, as well as weapons forms, two-person exercises, and meditations, once the basic requirements have been learned.
What to wear – Comfortable clothing that will allow you to move easily. No tank tops or shorts above the knee, please.
Many people train is socks, but soft, flat soled shoes are best. You can buy inexpensive tai chi shoes if you’d like, but they are not required.
Please Note: There will be a 1-week break in this series with NO CLASS on Thursday, Feb. 27.
Investment: $130.
Instructor: Ellen Schwartz, certified instructor of Wu’s Tai Chi Chuan Academy-Ann Arbor.
