WWRA: 73 percent of Chelsea residents plan to recycle thanks to single stream

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Laura Scriven, recycling education coordinator for WWRA for the information in this column.)

The single-stream line is up and running smoothly at Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority, and we are getting lots of requests for bins as word spreads about the ease and convenience of the new system.

The amount of product that we are processing is already up from the previous method. Currently, it is hard to accurately judge by how much, but it is something we are working on and hope to have those results available soon.

We have delivered 1,250 bins in Chelsea and we have already received orders for over 200 more. They should be here mid-January, and as we get exact delivery dates, they will be posted in Chelsea Update.

We thank you for your patience and understanding as demand far outnumbered previous projections. As stated before, we will continue to pick up recycled materials in available containers.

The great news is, approximately 73 percent of the City of Chelsea is currently, or planning on recycling, which is amazing. Participation is almost 70 percent higher than it was using the old sorting method.

Thank you, Chelsea, for working toward making single-stream recycling a success.

Due to the upcoming holiday, the normal Thursday, Nov. 22 pick-up will be on Tuesday, Nov. 20 instead. So, please make note of it.

Thank you, once again, for your hard work and dedication in making this project successful.

If you have any questions, please contact me, Laura Scriven, at [email protected].
