(Chelsea Update would like to thank the Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority and Laura Scriven for the information in this column.)

The Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority (WWRA) single-stream facility on Werkner Road is now open for free tours for your club or group.

Tours take about an hour long and include a video, an activity, and a look inside the plant.

The video shows the single-stream line at work, and participants get to see the line in operation as materials are dropped off at the site and put through the sorting process.

While watching the video, your guide will explain different aspects of the recycling process as well as providing insight into the need and benefits of recycling.

The activity will highlight different uses for recycled materials, either before or after recycling. For our younger visitors, there will be an art project to take home.

While on the tour, the recycling line may or may not be in operation, due supply, time, or day of the week but, visitors will be allowed to walk along the line as the guide explains what happens at each station and answers any questions.

If you are looking for something unusual to do that is also educational and free, give a call to WWRA at 475-6160 or email [email protected] and set a date for your special tour.
