Youth Dance Theatre of Michigan (YDT) will present “Beyond Boundaries: Sparking the Imagination” during two performances on Saturday, April 27, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Chelsea High School Auditorium, 740 N. Freer Road.

This show highlights classic ballet, with Swan Lake Act II and excerpts from Don Quixote, and features original choreography for jazz and contemporary ballet, according to information about the event.

Act II of Swan Lake (with choreography after Marius Petipa and music by Tchaikovsky) is often performed outside of the full-length ballet.

This year’s offering represents an encore performance from Youth Dance Theatre’s full-length premiere staging of the production from the 2012 Spring Performance.

New, original choreography will have its premiere, according to the press release, including new jazz works by Carrie Shotte and Maddy Prebola, and an imaginative contemporary ballet by Alyssa Alger.

A repertory section of choreography by Artistic Director Wendi DuBois includes the toe-tapping Benny (set to a wonderful recording of Benny Goodman performing “One O’clock Jump”), Heartstrings,  and the intense Danza de la Vida, a piece which was adjudicated for the 2013 Michigan Youth Arts Festival.

A contemporary ballet work for solo dancer, also by Alyssa Alger, premiered at University of Arizona, will also be presented.

To complete the program, YDT invites you to enjoy excerpts from the ballet Don Quixote, with new choreography by Wendi DuBois supplementing some of the original movement by Petipa, designed to showcase our youth dancers.  Don Quixote, first presented in 1869, is based on Cervantes’ literary masterpiece, and was choreographed by Petipa with music by L. Minkus.

Tickets for both performances are available online through YDT’s website http://www.youthdancetheatre.org, by calling 475-3070 or at the door.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors.

Refreshments and a silent auction will be offered during intermission.

Youth Dance Theatre of Michigan is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, which provides professional-level dance training to young dance students, through performance opportunities, enrichment activities, master classes, summer intensives and pre-professional studies.

YDT is proud to be supported by the Wilkinson Foundation, the Chelsea Wellness Foundation, The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance.
