4th case of whooping cough reported at South Meadows Elementary School

There’s been a fourth case of whooping cough reported at South Meadows Elementary School.

Principal Stacie Battaglia has been in contact with the Washtenaw County Health Department, cleaning protocols have been increased and the school is following all of the health department recommendations.

Superintendent of Schools Andy Ingall said via email that the county health department has been “supportive and helpful.”

“We are following their direction and recommendations in each case regarding notification of families and staff, as well as other preventative measures,” he said.

The children are not from the same class, but in the first cases, the district says they are close friends.

The district has not had more than one case per week, Ingall said, therefore “Health officials have not recommended any school closure or quarantine at this time.”

However, it is important to note that from the information provided, “transmission is airborne.”
