It’s not too late to support Faith in Action

Chelsea First United Methodist Church (CFUMC) sponsored a Facebook Live concert on July 25 to benefit Faith in Action (FIA), the local organization with a mission is to provide essential support to those in need, especially for those who reside in Chelsea, Dexter, and nearby communities.

Anyone who was not able to watch the event live still has an opportunity to virtually attend the concert through a high-resolution recording on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtUzkw3xP6c.

Linda Meloche of “Around Town” hosted the concert that featured local virtuosi Brian Brill, Mark Loring, Max Plank, and Cynthia Standefer; Chelsea High School (CHS) alumnae Katherine (Standefer) Grant and Katie Rae Hayduk; and CHS musicians. Music styles ranged from Americana and folk to classical.

Jeanne Franks, CFUMC’s director of youth ministries, who came up with the idea for raising needed funds for FIA during the pandemic; and Emily Kuo, who planned the event, are delighted with the response to the concert. Prior to the upload to YouTube, the popular concert had more than 1,500 views on the church’s Facebook page, and FIA’s donations since then have significantly increased above what was raised last year at this time.

Sheri Montoye, executive director of FIA, is grateful for the much-needed assistance during the pandemic—about $1,000 with about 60 percent of that coming from new donors—and thrilled that the high school musicians were given the opportunity “to do what they love in a safe environment.”

“This event also helped to raise awareness for the needs of the food pantry of Faith in Action,” said Montoye. “Thanks to the community, we are here to help, and are continuing our services safely in spite of COVID-19.”

Montoye said it can be hard for people with needs to ask for assistance, but it also may be the right thing to do. Individuals or families who have a need can complete an online form at www.faithinaction1.org and a social worker will contact them within a day or two during the week. Alternatively, people can phone FIA during business hours at (734) 475-3305 and ask to talk to Doug or Miranda.

“We will maintain your privacy and get you the assistance you might need right now during these incredibly weird and challenging times,” said Montoye.

In addition to financial donations, FIA can always use the following items: baked beans, coffee canned tomatoes, Hamburger Helper/any noodle helpers, shampoo, conditioner, cream soups, ketchup, cereal, juice, cleaning supplies, and personal products.

Financial contributions can be made to FIA through a link on their website at https://www.faithinaction1.org/donate/, or by mailing a check to Faith in Action, 603 South Main St., Chelsea, Mich. 48118.
