CORRECTION: I apologize, part of a sentence was left out of this story and has now been corrected. Public Works Superintendent Derik Bollinger was named the new Street Administrator for Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) for reporting purposes replacing former Community Development Director Julia Upfal, who also held that position.
The Chelsea City Council held two public hearings at its May 16 meeting – one for its draft FY 22-23 budget and another for the city’s fee schedule and millage rates.
No one spoke.
No increase is proposed for the city’s millage rates for the 13th year in a row. The proposed general operating millage remains at 11.2 mills, municipal streets at 1.22 mills and solid waste at 0.7355 mills.
The only proposed change in the city’s fee schedule is for new customers requiring 1-inch meters. Due to the fluctuations in pricing, they will need to contact the city for pricing.
City Council budget approval is planned for June 6 and the approved budget is expected to be published on the city’s website on June 10.
In other business, the City Council unanimously approved a proclamation request from Moms Demand Action, a national gun safety and gun sense organization, according to information provided to the City Council. The proclamation declares the first Friday in June, this year on June 3, as National Gun Safety Awareness Day as a way “to honor and remember all victims and survivors of gun violence and to declare that as a county we must do more” according to the proclamation, which among other things, asks people to wear orange that day. Residents are also reminded that free gun locks are available at the City Police Department.
The City Council also unanimously adopted a resolution to replace former Community Development Director Julia Upfal with Public Works Superintendent Derik Bollinger as Street Administrator for Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) for reporting purposes.
The City Council also welcomed new City Clerk Lyn Sebestyen who attended her first city council meeting and Interim City Manager Amanda Garber announced that McKenna, a consulting firm, was hired on an interim basis to assist the city’s planning department until a new Community Development Director is hired.
