Chelsea Police: three smash and grab thefts in parking lots in last two days

Chelsea Police are investigating three “smash and grab” thefts from cars parked in lots in town during the last two days, and they are reminding residents not to leave valuables in plain view while vehicles are parked outside.

Chelsea Police Chief Ed Toth

According to a Nixle alert issued Tuesday afternoon, police are asking people to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity, and call 911 with as accurate a description of the activity as possible.

During the last two days, three vehicle windows have been broken and items were stolen, the alert states.

The vehicles have been parked mostly in parking lots and suspect(s) have smashed out the windows and stolen items from the vehicles that have been in plain view, according to the alert.

“Please refrain from leaving valuable items in your vehicles; if this can not be avoided, please attempt to hide the items in a place outside of view such as in the trunk or under the seat,” police said.

These incidents appear to be occurring in parking lots during daylight hours, so if you observe suspicious behavior or see someone loitering around vehicles for an extended period of time, call 911 immediately, the alert states.

Police ask callers to “attempt to get a good description of the subject and describe the behaviors that are raising your suspicions to the dispatcher,” the alert states.
