The Chelsea District Library has been reaching out to surrounding townships.

At its June 21 meeting, the Library Board discussed the upcoming installation of hotspots at both Sylvan Township Hall and Lima Township Hall, which will allow people to obtain internet access.

Inside the library, a new sculpture is being installed, and thanks to Friends of Chelsea District Library, a grant will pay for a tree near the benches as part of the library’s 10th anniversary celebration Aug. 18.

Youth Librarian Jessica Zubick has been working with local artist Cynthia Silveri to develop a coloring book to commemorate the anniversary. Trained docents will lead tours of the library including the soon-to-be updated Media Area. Adult Services Librarian Emily Meloche will work with local residents who will share memorabilia from the library’s history in McKune, and there will be crafts for kids and cake and ice cream for all.

Photos for banners have been chosen for the World War I Project, which will run from July-November. The 24 avenue banners will be installed on lampposts starting at the south end of Main Street through to the north end.

The Summer Reading/Summer Learning Program began on June 15 with a party on the library lawn and board members reported that hundreds of people turned out.

The new Summer Munch Bunch program for kids ages 3-17 began the week of June 20 and runs through the week of Aug. 1. The library offers afternoon snacks and stories on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-3 p.m. in the Reading Garden. The program is sponsored by Faith in Action.

In other news, Chelsea has been named one of the top 30 great small towns in the U.S. for book lovers and was the only town from Michigan to be honored.
