Although they unanimously voted to approve an agreement with the Washtenaw County Road Commission, the Sylvan Township Board members were not pleased with the choice they had to make under deadline at their June 6 meeting.

he choice was between chip sealing Cavanaugh Lake Road from Pierce Road to Chelsea and chip sealing Werkner Road from M-52 to Sibley Road using $70,000 the township acquired through a railroad closing, or spending an additional amount close to $70,000 and chip sealing Ridge Road, Glazier Road, Pierce Road, Bush Road from Pierce Road to Sibley Road, and Sibley Road from Bush Road to Chelsea.

The board unanimously chose the latter at a total cost of $138,550 with Sylvan Township matching the WCRC’s share and both parties each paying $69,275.

in other action, the board approved the authorization for legal counsel and staff to proceed with drafting documents for a Chelsea Hillcrest preliminary development agreement and amendment to the planned unit development concurrent with the application of the final site plan to be presented to the planning commission.

Sylvan Township Zoning Administrator Carol Konieczki suggested that board members might want to take an active role regarding the language in the documents.

The Planning Commission approved the preliminary site plan in February for the 3.12 acres known as Chelsea Hillcrest in which the developer is proposing 17 condominium units.

The board also approved Robin Hills Farm’s application to proceed to apply for a Class C liquor license from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission for the purpose of maintaining greater control over the service of alcohol at the farm.

Two applications for fireworks displays were approved contingent upon receiving proof of insurance no later than Wednesday June 28 at noon.

The board also voted to update its investment policy regarding township funds.

In other action, the board agreed to authorize the township attorney to transfer the Maple Grove Cemetery deed to Sylvan Township to more easily operate the cemetery, which the township has already been doing. It was good timing because the board honored Josh Cole with a proclamation for his Eagle Scout project in which he created complete burial records of Maple Grove Cemetery.

Chelsea Area Fire Authority Fire Chief Rob Arbini also made an appearance at the meeting to introduce himself to the board.
