Recent obituary: Betty Ruth Damren

Betty Ruth Damren of Chelsea, formerly Ann Arbor, age 99, passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2018 at the Chelsea Retirement Community.

She was born July 19, 1918 in Ames, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Florence (Wilcox) Jessup, and grew up on a farm near Adrian.

Betty was a retired educator, living at the Chelsea Retirement Community. Her undergraduate degree was from Eastern Michigan University. After Pearl Harbor, she volunteered for the Red Cross and was stationed in London during some of the perilous times of World War II.

She and her husband, Samuel N. Damren, married after the war and moved to Ann Arbor. She received graduate degrees from the University of Michigan and worked at the University’s Children’s Psychiatric Hospital and the Ann Arbor Public Schools as a reading specialist during her career. She was a long-time volunteer with Arbor Hospice and Friends in Need.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 27, 2 p.m. at the Towsley Chapel at Chelsea Retirement Community.
