25th annual Chelsea/Dexter Crop Walk Sunday, Oct. 7

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Chelsea/Dexter CROP Hunger Walk, which will take place Oct. 7, with opening ceremonies at St. Paul Church at 1:30 p.m.

Since its inception, the Crop Walk has raised more than $400,000, according to organizers, and $22,800 in 2011.

All of the money is used to alleviate hunger and poverty around the world, according to information about the event, and 15 percent of the total is given to Faith in Action.

Last year, about 100 people participated from 13 different organizations, including churches, senior residences, neighborhoods, and Chelsea High School, according to event information.

The walk is always held on the first Sunday in October and walkers will arrive at St. Paul United Church of Christ, 14600 Old US-12 at 1:30 p.m.

After a brief kick-off ceremony, participants will begin either a 1-mile or a 5-mile route around town.

While walking, they can carry photos of Third World walking partners “to bring to mind the effort that many poor people around the world have to make every day just to get water and wood for cooking fires.”

After completing the walk, participants return to St. Paul’s for refreshments, massages, and relaxation.

If you’d like to get involved, contact your local church or pick up a walker’s packet at Faith in Action, 603 S. Main St. or call 475-3305.

There is neither a minimum age for walkers nor a minimum amount of money that must be raised to participate.
