April 16: Chelsea Kiwanis Club hosting ‘Superinterclub’; SRSLY presentation

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

On Monday, April 16, the Chelsea Kiwanis Club will host a “Superinterclub”, in which Kiwanis clubs from Washtenaw, Livingston, and Oakland counties are invited to share ideas and hear a special program.

Rebecca Jaskot from SRSLY will speak about the mission, history, and upcoming events for the students in the program. Student members of the SRSLY coalition may speak about their experiences spreading the word about avoiding substance abuse.

Last week, the club celebrated local first responders. Chelsea Police Chief Ed Toth reported that the homeless population has increased recently. Much effort is expended determining the best way to help each individual.

Two new officers are on board to help with the busy season starting with police details during the Heart and Sole race, and later with Sounds and Sights on Thursday Nights, and the Chelsea Community Fair.

He said 27,000 vehicles use Main Street every day.

The police department has collected about 600 pounds of unwanted drugs at the station, and has responded to 4-5 drug overdoses. Toth said he’s seen drug problems happening to young or old, rich or poor.

Chelsea Area Fire Authority Chief Rob Arbini told the club that he has established more open communication in the department and is putting standard operating procedures in place. He is pursuing grants from the federal government for personnel, a new engine, and technological improvements.

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m. Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis.
