This month, Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots, the Jane Goodall Institute’s global environmental and humanitarian youth program, accepted Chelsea High School junior Artemis Eyster as a member of the program’s 2014 National Youth Leadership Council.

Eyster serves as group leader of Chelsea Roots and Shoots, a local chapter of the program.

She is also an artist at Huron Valley Botanical Club and has presented numerous workshops on nature awareness, nature crafts and keeping a nature journal at the Waterloo Recreation Area’s Discovery Center.

In September, she spoke at the National Association of Environmental Educators Conference in Baltimore, MD, and in January presented at the Stewardship Network Conference in Lansing, Mich. In addition to her environmental advocacy efforts, Eyster is a member of Chelsea High School’s marching band; Chelsea House Orchestra; the school’s cross country and track teams.

In support of Eyster’s application to the council, Nancy Stranahan, Director of the Arc of Appalachia, said in a press release, “I think that Artemis shows more than mere promise to be a leader in the environmental protection field. With her passion, eloquence, commitment to the earth, and unwavering heart-connection to protecting the biodiversity of life, it is my opinion that such work is her destiny.”

Throughout this year, Eyster and the members of the council will participate in comprehensive skills trainings with Roots & Shoots leadership development and service learning experts. A new group of 12 council members including Eyster, joins 21 other Roots and Shoots leaders who have served on the council previously.

For the last decade, since the Roots and Shoots National Youth Leadership Council’s inception in 2013, the program has provided members with opportunities to pave the way toward university academic experiences at top-quality schools and successful careers as change-makers and community leaders.
