In the last, and certainly the most prestigious youth competition of the 80th annual Chelsea Community Fair, Bailey Welshans, 17, of Dexter was named the Sweepstakes Showmanship winner.

At the end of the competition, during which each senior showman showed each of the different species at the fair, Welshans and Mason Trinkle, 16, of Chelsea tied with 131 points each.

The tie was broken when the two were asked about their own species. Welshans had the beef steer and Trinkle, the lamb. Welshans was named the sweepstakes winner with her correct answers.

For Trinkle, it was the second year in a row he has been the runner-up.

Throughout the competition, the participants were asked the same questions about each type of livestock they showed and were scored according to their knowledge and showmanship skills. Each species is shown in a unique way.

Qualifying for the event were: Hannah Hicks, 16, of Dexter with her chicken; Lake VanNatter, 15, of Dexter with a rabbit; Natalie Schneider, 15, of Chelsea with a pig; Mason Trinkle, 16, of Chelsea with a lamb; Shelby Williams, 15, of Ann Arbor with a goat; Emily Weaver, 15, of Dexter with a Western horse; Gracie Willis, 16, of Dexter with a dairy calf; Bailey Welshans, 17, with a steer and Abby Morris of Chelsea with an English horse.
