Chelsea City Council OKs administrative tax collecting, delinquent tax fees

Chelsea logo 2The Chelsea City Council unanimously approved a 1-percent administrative fee for tax collection, a 3-percent penalty for delinquent real and personal tax payments as well as a 1-percent per month interest charge on delinquent property taxes at its meeting on June 25.

Summer tax bills are scheduled to go out on July 1 and are due by Sept. 16.

The Michigan Property Tax Act allows the city to collect not more than a 1 percent administrative fee to “offset costs incurred by the collecting unit in assessing property values, in collecting the property tax levies, and in the review and appeal processes… .”

All three measures must be approved by the City Council each year if they are to be collected.

The City Council also approved a joint meeting with the city Planning Commission on Tuesday, July 2 beginning at 7 p.m. in the council chambers of the new police station.

And, on July 9 at 6 p.m., before its next regular council meeting, elected officials will meet with the Lima Township Board to discuss a pending development called Lima Springs.

There are about 50 residents who have signed a petition drive against the project.

In part, according to the petition, here’s what these residents object to: ” A proposal to develop a high density subdivision on the property behind Chelsea Ridge has been submitted to Lima Township by Ron Cook, former owner of R. Cook Properties who developed Chelsea Ridge and a portion of Chelsea Fairways. The proposal is for 109 homes to be built on 42.6 acres on Lima Township land and would require utilities from the City of Chelsea. In order to do this, Lima Township would need to reach an agreement with the City of Chelsea on annexation in the form of a Public Act 425 agreement.”

Following the meeting, the City Council went into closed session to discuss the City manager’s evaluation.
