Chelsea City Council sets public hearing date to sell old police building

With the Chelsea Police Department posed to begin operations in its new building, the Chelsea City Council voted unanimously on July 24 to set a public hearing for Aug. 28 to sell the old station at 104 E. Middle Street.

The City Charter stipulates that a public hearing is required before city-owned “real property” such as a building, can be put up for sale.

Chelsea City Manager John Hanifan

“The sale of the old police building is listed in the city’s 2012-13 goals and objectives,” a memo from City Manager John Hanifan states, adding that since it’s a building and not a park or a cemetery, the sale can be made without a vote of the residents.

The time lag before the public hearing is needed to have it noticed with the city’s newspaper of record.

Council Member Frank Hammer moved the public hearing saying, “I’d really like to make this motion; I’m very happy about it.”

Council Member Cheri Albertson seconded the motion.
