Chelsea city manager thanks community for patience during Main Street construction

With the construction on M-52/Main Street entering its second week, Chelsea City Manager John Hanifan took a moment at the Aug. 5 Chelsea City Council meeting to thank the community for its patience during the ongoing construction.

Once completed, he said, the situation will be much improved.

In the one business item during the 10-minute meeting, the City Council unanimously approved a request by residents on East Summit Street to close the street for a block party on Sunday, Aug. 25 from 5-8:30 p.m.

During council comments, Council Member Cheri Albertson noted that youth on motorized vehicles were utilizing the new Border-to-Border Trail connector just off Austin Lane and although no one had been injured yet, she feared that there could be a problem in the future.

She was assured that motorized vehicles are not permitted on the trail, and that the folks in charge of the trail would be notified. It was noted that further up the trail, there is a sign that warns motorized vehicles were prohibited, but Albertson suggested that perhaps another sign off Austin Lane should be erected.

Council Member Frank Hammer reported that the first Flanders Fest on Aug. 4 was a success and that the Chelsea Area Historical Society (CAHS) raised about $1,300 during the fundraiser.

He said that there is now only about $1,000 remaining to retire the mortgage on the non-profit’s Jackson Street museum building. Hammer said CAHS plans to make the event, which includes a gathering of motorcyclists, an annual one, and that when choosing a date next year, the group will be sure that it does not coincide with an antique motorcycle race in another part of the state.
