Chelsea Human Rights Commission makes changes to proposed bylaws

By Lisa Carolin

The Chelsea Human Rights Commission received a complaint on July 24 but has been unable to respond to it because the Chelsea City Council has not yet approved the HRC’s bylaws.

The two groups met on Sept. 18 for a work session to discuss changes to the bylaws. At the HRC’s Sept. 20 meeting, the four members (there is currently a vacancy) worked on the bylaws with the hope that the City Council will approve them at its next meeting (Oct. 2).

HRC members unanimously voted to notify the complainant that they have forwarded the copies of the complaint to the City Manager, City Attorney, and City Council. The HRC is required to take action on a complaint within 90 days.

The HRC is working on a survey to give to local businesses and individuals to find out what the community wants. At the Sept. 20 meeting, members agreed to wait until the City Council approves the HRC’s bylaws before presenting the survey to council for approval.
